Dr. Liotta received his BA in chemistry at Queens College of City University of New York (1970) and Ph.D. in organic chemistry from City University of New York (1974). He did a postdoctoral research fellowship at Ohio State University and joined Emory University as Chair for the Department of Chemistry and Vice President for Research. Currently, Dr. Liotta holds the Samuel Candler Dobbs Professorship and is the Director of the Emory University Institute of Drug Development. As a serial entrepreneur, Dr. Liotta’s experience in biotech, pharmaceutical, and philanthropic sectors is invaluable. His position on Scientific Advisory Boards of several biotech companies and venture capital firms renders him an immense asset. Dr. Liotta offers sought-after expertise and instrumental input to the technological advancement and commercial growth of Radyus.
Having co-founded both EIDD (Emory Institute for Drug Development) and DRIVE (Drug Innovation Ventures at Emory) and served as Director of EIDD, Dr. Liotta is a knowledgeable resource regarding the coupling of early-stage R&D to propelling drug candidates through the pipeline for commercialization.Dr. Liotta has catalyzed more than 30 licensing agreements between Emory and various commercialization partners. His innovations have led to 18 lifesaving FDA-approved therapeutics. Dr. Liotta was the founding Editor-in-Chief of ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters and has co-founded more than ten biotech companies, bringing several drugs to market. Notably, he is the recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Award, the 2022 Perkin Medal, the Herty Metal, The Alfred Burger Award in Medicinal Chemistry, the Wallace H. Carothers Award, and the American Chemical Society-Bristol Myers Squibb Smissman Award. He has been elected to the National Academy of Inventors and the Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame.
Dr. Liotta received a Ph.D., in organic chemistry from City University of New York. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles on a wide variety of topics. About 95% of patients living with HIV/AIDS take or have taken a drug co-invented by Dr. Liotta. He holds inventorship to over 100 issued patents and, in his over 40 years of experience, Dr. Liotta has mentored more than 150 graduate and post-graduate students.
Dr. Liotta is committed to fostering new approaches to drug development in academia and overcoming obstacles in the process of academic drug development. He is the co-founder of AHIA (Advancing Healthcare Innovation in Africa) and started iThemba Pharmaceuticals in South Africa, allowing them to develop a foundation for a growing African biotech industry. His goal is to increase the longevity and quality of life for patients by discovering and developing lifesaving therapeutic agents.
