Dr. Richard Silverman received his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Pennsylvania State University (1968) and obtained his PhD in Organic Chemistry from Harvard University under the tutelage of David Dolphin (1974). He then completed a postdoctoral research fellowship studying enzymology at Brandeis where he worked with Robert Abeles (1976). Currently, as the Patrick G. Ryan/Aon Professor of Chemistry at Northwestern University Dr. Silverman and his group prioritize both basic and translational research investigating diseases of the central nervous system and cancer.
As a member of the Scientific Advisory Board, Dr. Silverman brings with him more than fifty years of research and preclinical pharmaceutical development experience to Radyus. As founder of Akava Therapeutics, Dr. Silverman’s experience in discovering, developing, and propelling lead compounds through the therapeutic pipeline is crucial to our work at Radyus.
Dr. Silverman is known for the discovery of Lyrica® (pregabalin), marketed worldwide by Pfizer for the treatment of fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain, epilepsy, and (in Europe) for generalized anxiety. He is also the inventor of CPP-115, which has successfully completed a Phase 1 clinical trial and is currently used via compassionate use IND for a child with infantile spasms. Dr. Silverman also invented OV329 (licensed to Ovid Therapeutics) for movement disorders and NU-9 (AKV9, licensed to Akava Therapeutics) for treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Dr. Silverman received a BS in Chemistry from Pennsylvania State University and a PhD in Organic Chemistry from Harvard University. Dr. Silverman has been the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions throughout his career. He received the Perkin Medal from the Society of Chemical Industry and was inducted into the Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame (2009). Most recently, he received the Tetrahedron Prize for Creativity in Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry (2021). He has published 396 peer-reviewed articles and 5 on a wide variety of topics, and holds 130 issued patents (93 U.S. patents). He founded Akava Therapeutics, a company focused on developing first-in-class small molecule therapeutics that inhibit protein aggregation and enzymes for a variety of neurodegenerative diseases and cancers. His mission is to discover and develop first-in-class inhibition therapeutics that address unmet medical needs in neurodegeneration and oncology, allowing patients to live longer with improved quality of life.
